HandsOn: Biobanks
Uppsala Konsert & Kongress
20-21 September 2012, Uppsala, Sweden
Biobanking has become hot, and rather quickly. The technology, the claims and the investments are increasing, but what is the value we are chasing? The route from a human biological sample and registry data to real benefit for patients and public health is complex. Many activities make up this route: funding, ethical review, sample and data collection, storage, bioanalysis and bioinformatics. Each is intended to add value, but how do we make sure we see and increase the benefits?
At this interactive conference we invite you to help understand and improve the activities in these value chains and bring more benefit to humanity. We will use Idea Labs, Hands-On Exhibitions, poster presentations and knowledge sharing to present, discuss and develop ideas for getting the best out of biobanking. We invite academy, industry, doctors, patient groups, policy makers, public representatives and legislators to share knowledge and concerns, and to contribute.

About HandsOn: Biobanks
Keynote presentations
Each day starts with two keynote presenters that together will address future issues: both problems and solutions that arise in clinical practise, health economy, drug development and ethics and trust.
The Friday programme consists of two parallel sessions with keynote presentations, with one session focusing primarily on the modern analysis technology.
Idea labs:
The Value of Biobanking
- Why biobank? What are the ultimate benefits?
- How do we gain and describe the value?
- Cost-benefit: how do we secure funding to pay for it all?
Gaining knowledge from samples and data
- How do we choose which populations to sample?
- How can we co-ordinate samples with data registries?
- How do we realize the promises of molecular analyses and bioinformatics?
Navigating the ethical and legal framework
- How do we strike the right balance between individual integrity and research improving public health?
- How can we improve informed consent?
- Does the ethical review process meet the needs?
Working together: academy, healthcare and industry
- Are the common interests compatible?
- Does today’s legal and ethical framework help or hinder collaboration?
- How do we encourage future collaborations and maintain competition?
The format for the Idea Lab is a short introduction followed by interactive sessions. A reporter will bring a summary to a plenary session.
The optimal route from sample to result
An exhibition will describe the route from sample collection through storage and analysis to end results that add value, for example to clinical practise, health care effectiveness, drug development and public confidence in medical research.
On this route, the samples and the data will travel through a chain of different activities and processes. In an interactive exhibition we will with your help suggest how this route can be improved. Doctors, researchers, industry, health care administrators, biobank and registry organizers and other participants are invited to share their thoughts on how we can better use state of the art technology, health registries, clinical samples or big national research biobanks to produce good research while protecting the integrity of the sample donors.
Knowledge sharing
We invite researchers, scientists, networks, industry and health care providers to share knowledge in the exhibition. We offer poster presentations and/or 20 minute presentations in three parallel sessions during the long lunch break.
Call for abstracts: submission deadline May 10.
Exibitions/sponsors
We invite industry, universities, health care providers and organizations to participate with exhibitions. A special invitation is directed to all EU- and IMI-funded consortia working with human tissue samples and registries. The aim of this conference is to share visions, knowledge and solutions, and we offer our knowledge sharing platforms (posters and/or oral presentations) to both sponsors and participants.

Book Report – Adding value to biobanking
A team of editors will bring insights from Key Note Lectures, Idea Labs, The Route, Exhibitions and Knowledge Sharing in a report to be published before the end of the year.
